Fell Running Gear

Fell running (ie running up and down hills) for sport originated in the Lake District and fell races (along with Cumberland wrestling and the fine art of gurning) have formed part of many a local show in the Lake District from time immemorial. Nowadays numerous fell races are held every year in the UK under the auspices of the Fell Runners Association and fell running is an important part of most mountain endurance events. However fell running does not have to be competitive, and many climbers use it simply to keep fit for the alps and greater ranges and as a way of enjoying the hills with the minimum of clobber.
