Snow Shovels

A Snow Shovel is a must for ski-touring as skiers moving quickly through snowy terrain are perhaps more likely to set off an avalanche than most other mountaineers: each member of the party should have a shovel and probe and know how to use them.

They also come into their own on expeditions for digging snow caves, latrines, piling snow onto your tent's snow valence etc. And all winter mountaineers would be wise to have one in their car in case of snowdrifts.
