APPROACH SHOES

The term "Approach Shoe" is very loosely bandied around, but ideally it should mean a lightweight shoe suitable for summer approaches to high crags and possibly for carrying up you climb to wear on the descent. Some of the shoes below fit this description more than others and this is generally indicated in the text. In many ways, Fell Running Shoes make better approach shoes than "Approach Shoes" do!

 


Five Ten - Guide Tennie

Guide Tennie Top end technical approach shoe designed for the walk-in to a route and then the climb as well - "better fitting, better performing and better looking than ever" - according to Five-Ten.

Synthetic Propex upper with Leather reinforcement. Stealth® C4 dotty tread soles. Compression molded EVA midsoles. Technical toe rand. Rocker built into last. Ankle to toe lacing for a higher performance.

Although the sizing is still virtually the same as in 2005, this new 2007 model is slightly rounder at the toe and a little less asymetric most people will take their standard shoe size, or half a size larger.

Five Ten - Dæscent

Dæscent Super light (only 500g/pair UK 8s) approach shoe for boulderers and rock jocks. Smooth stealth rubber at the front for maximum friction when boulder hopping or doing easy routes/problems and a dotty tread at the rear for grip when descending. Lighweight breathable uppers with an elastic strap at the rear for attaching to a krab so they can be clipped to your harness, rucksack or bouldering mat.

The Dæscent is a comfy shoe, ideal for road trips and for hanging around classic climbing areas such as Font, Hampi, Hueco Tanks, Yosemite, and Joshua Tree. It is not really suitable or robust enough for approaching UK mountain crags due to the smooth nature of the sole and the lightweight materials used in the uppers.

It is also a great shoe for carrying in the alps and greater ranges, to slip on in place of mountain boots, for the occasional more technical rock pitch.

NB. These are sized small - so order half a size bigger than you would normally wear.

Five Ten - Camp 4

Camp 4 The new Camp 4 is a rugged multi-purpose/approach shoe with an external molded PU heel cage for added rear-foot support and stability. It is light enough for everyday wear, but extremely rugged, and designed as an alternative to boots. Lace to toe closure can be worn relaxed for a long-distance fit, or tightened for climbing and scrambling. Co-molded Stealth C4/S1 high-friction soles provide excellent friction on any terrain. A sort of cross between the Guide Tennie and the old Crag Master with a better sole for UK scrambling than either. Not waterproof.

It incorporates a number of Five Ten rock shoe features for higher performance including Stealth C4/S1 co-moulded soles, slingshot rands, and lace-to-toe styling. Full-grain nubuk leather uppers with protective toe rands provide excellent abrasion resistance.

CTC (Men's) CTC stands for Car to Car, which describes quite well what this shoe is designed for - ie all day summer walking, crag approaches, and scrambling. Good lateral stiffness and a rubber protected toe box mean the foot is well protected against sharp rock. Stretch fit tounge, good grippy sole with flat edging section for climbing, mesh upper (not waterproof). 390g/pair approx
