Bookcase - A Lakeland Climbing Pioneer - John Wilson Robinson of Whinfell Hall (2008)

A Lakeland Climbing Pioneer - John Wilson Robinson of Whinfell Hall (2008) John Robinson was one the early instigators of Lake District climbing and was involved in many first ascents with fellow pioneers of the likes of WP Haskett Smith and OG Jones. He was so highly thought of by his fellow mountaineers that when he died of cancer at a relatively young age they clubbed together to build the splendid memorial of Robinson's Cairn near Pillar Rock, his favourite crag.

This book by Michael Waller is not soley about his climbing, but also concerns his life a prominent member of the local farming community. It is illustrated with numerous old photos though the rquality of reproduction is not brilliant.

Card cover, 145 pages.

Abraham Family/Titus Wilson - Capturing The Mountains - The Lake District though the Lens of the Abraham Brothers (2008)

Capturing The Mountains - The Lake District though the Lens of the Abraham Brothers (2008) A collection of superb photographs from the late Victorian/Edwardian era, both climbing and otherwise, taken by Keswick's renowned climbing photographers, George and Ashley Abraham. This is a very large book 25cm x 34cm x 1.5cm with lots of unnumbered pages and a card cover. There is an introduction by Sue Steinberg, Ashley Abraham's grandaughter and each photo is captioned, though the captions are rather minimal. However the photographic reproduction is very good and this is an intriguiing collection that is unlikely to be reprinted - one not to be missed.

Open Mountain - Happy Climbing tells no Tales (2007)

Happy Climbing tells no Tales (2007) Rarely is climbing fiction worth reading: generally it is dismal stuff full of miserable characters who can't pay their bills and spend their days on the dole gazing out of rain spattered windows in some grim northern town. All thoroughly depressing - there are some notable exceptions of course but sadly they are few and far between.

Judith Brown's essays are different. Packed full of wittily observed portraits of the climbing and hill folk that she knows so well from her many climbing trips all over the world made from her base in the northern Lake District, they are also well written and a pleasure to read. Paperback, 114 pages.
