CORD & TAPE OFF THE REEL | | |
| "Tat", or lengths of cord or tape are an essential weapon in the climber's armoury, and routinely carrying a few metres of tat when winter or alpine climbing means that when things go wrong safe retreat can can be made with minimal loss of of equipment (and money!). Besides making threads, loops for spikes, and threading peg eyes, tat is necessary for constructing the famous Abalakov Thread, a simple invention that has considerably increased the safety of ice climbers in recent years. Even when rock climbing, using a length of cord or tape (rather than a belt) to fasten your chalkbag on with means that you have material at hand to make an abseil sling that can be abandoned, or a Prusik loop, should the circumstances demand it. Cords : | | | Most climbing cords are static in construction and are designed for threading hexes and nuts, using as Prusik loops, abseil tat and a host of other mountain related uses. They are not designed for leading, though the thicker diameters (7mm, 8mm) may be safely used to safeguard a second as long as there is no slack allowed in the rope - they can thus make quite good light scrambling and hill-walking safety ropes. The breaking strain is given in kiloNewtons which is a measurement of force. To give a rough equivalent in weight, add two zeros to the figure to give an approximation in Kilograms (eg 5.5kN is approximately 550kg). Cord comes in the diameters listed below and is sold per metre. If you order, say, 20 metres then you will get one 20 metre length. To order, click "Add", and then select the number of metres that you want. Unfortunately the software we use amalgamates orders, so if you actually want 2 x 10m lengths please order 20m and then write what lengths you want it cut into in the "Special Instructions" box as you check out. It is cut with a "hot-knife" that seals it as well. If you need to cut it again then you will need to find a friendly shop that has a hot-knife to do it for you. If you want specific lengths and diameters suitable for restringing Hexes and other nuts, please see below. If you want specific lengths and diameters suitable for Prusik loops, please see below. The best knot for securely joining cord is the Double Fisherman's. | |

Cords for Hexes: | | | For rethreading Hexes and other nuts, we suggest that 1.25m of cord will allow for a reasonably long loop and a Double Fisherman's Knot with a good "tail". Cord comes in the diameters listed below and is sold per 1.25 metre, especially for Hexes etc. It is cut with a "hot-knife" that seals it as well. If you need to cut it again then you will need to find a friendly shop that has a hot-knife to do it for you. If you want other lengths and diameters suitable for other uses such as Prusik loops please see below.

Prusik Loops: | | | The cheapest and lightest ascender on the market is a Prusik Loop. For climbing a free-hanging fixed rope, Prusik loops need to be used in pairs (though not matching pairs) and at a minimum, two screwgate karabiners and a long sling are also required. Anyone climbing multi-pitched routes anywhere should carry two prussik loops, a long sling and some screwgates at all times (and know how to use them), as there is always a risk of falling into a position where you are dangling free of the rock, and your partner cannot haul you, nor is the rope long enough to lower you.

Tape on the Reel: | | | Few people make their own slings these days - pre-sewn ones are relatively cheap and much stronger and lighter. However winter and alpine climbers generally carry a few metres of "abseil tat" in case of emergencies and other abseil descents. This can be used to form a loop round a flake or through a thread or insitu piton (it is worth carrying a knife to chop old tat out of the way, though bashing it against the rock with your adze works well if you're stuck). Use a tape knot to join the two ends together and leave good tails to allow for slippage. To order select the total number of metres that you want. If you want this cut into more than one length then please specify this in the "Special Instructions" box when you check out. Strengths: 1000 kilograms equals very approximately 10 kiloNewtons. NB For Climbing Cord please see above. For non-climbing polypropylene tape please see our Repairs Section.
