Specialist non-waterproof highly breathable gaiter for scree and glacial moraine in arid conditions.

These short gaiters are designed to stop stuff getting in the top of your boots and not really designed for keeping water out. They fit very snuggly over the boot top. Sizing is for standard trekking boots, they will fit on lightweight fabric boots or large mountain boots but you will have to check the sizing.

Tough Goretex front fastening full overgaiter with exceptionally durable 5-10 sticky rubber rand. These are far more durable than similar gaiters from other brands we have tried.

On virtually all boots it will be necessary to glue the toe onto the rand of the boot. This is best done by turning the toe inside out and then fitting the heel of the gaiter to the boot. Then spread glue over the front of the boot rand and flip the gaiter toe over pushing it onto the boot and temporarily fixing it in place with sellotape. The best glue for the job seems to be Freesole, though any seam sealant should do.

Buffalo used to make their own Bivi Boots but unaccountably dropped them from their range. We redesigned them so that they now feature a pertex outer and pile inner with a waterproof nylon sole. Made for us by Mardale.

They are ideal for winter camping and alpine bivis as they weigh virtually nothing but will warm your feet up quickly, dry out damp socks in the process and are waterproof enough to cope with an essential dash out of the tent in the middle of the night. Very comfortable worn inside plastic boot outers for loafing around basecamp and great used in this way for fording rivers.

The Forty Below® Camp Booties are insulated with a continuous filament polyester fiber, so they dry fast if they get wet. They also provide insulation even if wet, as compared to down/feather insulation which provides no insulation when wet, plus may not ever get dry again during a trip.

This synthetic insulation goes completely around and under your foot. The insulation is a continuous filament polyester fiber, that has been laminated to one side of the shell fabric for stability, and also silicone treated to resist bunching of the fibers and allow for better moisture evaporation. This unique synthetic fill has shown to not tyically bunch/clump-up or compress over time as with most other insulation types.

They are very compact, and superlight at only 345g per pair size large! The sole is made of a special waterproof rubber material, about 1-2mm thick, that is essentially a rubber/polymer blend that is embossed into a fabric. This gives it the properties being flexible at super cold temperatures, and grippy with small dot shapes across the entire bottom. There is also a 7.5mm thick closed cell foam insole. There is a Cordura nylon rand around the lower bottom, taffeta nylon upper, and taffeta nylon lining to make them easy to take on and off with wool socks on. Drawstring with cordlock top closure. The tape laces offer a great way to add support not found in most camp booties. The laces are made of a 5/8" wide thin nylon webbing that simpy crosses over the top of the foot, and goes around the ankle and ties in the front. This adds virtually no weight and no bulk as there are no buckles or hardware to get in the way, or cause discomfort when using them inside a mountaineering boot shell around camp. You can also take the laces off and replace with any other lacing, cord, or homemade buckle/strap/velcro.

Tough waterproof socks for high altitude and alpine winter use. In extreme cold, wear them between a thin inner sock and a thicker outer sock. This way all the sweat is trapped in the thin inner sock and your thick outer sock stays dry as does your boot inner. This keeps your feet warmer, plus it is much easier to dry out a thin sock. On the downside, you need to strip your thin socks off each night and replace them with a dry pair, and they are not recommended if you are prone to foot fungus.

This vapour barrier sock works by blocking evaportive heat-loss keeping heat and moisture from moving into the insulation of the 200 weight Polartec fleece as well as the inner boot. The technology has seen a decade of use in the coldest and highest places on earth. The fabric is VaprThrm® insulation which has a lightweight soft polyester wicking lining, vapor barrier film and Polartec 200 fleece combined. Product and materials are made in the USA. Machine washable.

The Hi-Rise version is a calf-length cut with the volume in the foot and ankle reduced to eliminate folds and pressure points and give the ideal sock for telemark boots, snowboarding boots and trimmer mountaineering boots.

They won't fit you if your calves are larger than 37cm in circumference but RBH may make you a custom pair if you contact them directly.

Andy Kirkpatrick has written a very good Review of these socks that was originally published in Climb Magazine. They are also number 1 on a list of the Top Ten List of Things to Take to the Pole compiled by the Matrix Shackleton Centenary Expedition. In addition, Ben Saunders used RBH socks on a 14-day solo North Pole Expedition 2003. Conditions encountered included temperatures between -12ºC and -32ºC, high winds, snow, thin ice and open water. He wrote" Wow! I was initially concerned by the appearance of the Insulator liners - the exposed seams looked like they would cause problems during the 120+ miles of hauling a heavy sledge. I couldn't have been more wrong! They were used in conjunction with Norwegian Alfa Mordre Extreme ski boots (custom made with a wool line) - these are famous for being great ski boots, but also for not being that warm. The addition of the RBH Designs Insulator Liners transformed the boots & I skied in absolute comfort for 2 weeks. Not once did I suffer from cold toes or blisters - the two most common foot problems in the high Arctic, and the Insulator liners show no sign of wear at all. I wore them with a thin Coolmax liner and have no hesitation recommending then to future polar expeditions, or indeed to anyone looking to keep their feet warm in the most extreme conditions."

The Forty Below® Purple Haze overboot is a completely stretchy insulated overgaiter that is easy to put on boots. A favorite insulated overgaiter for use on Denali, Himalayas, and Polar expeditions. Patterned to fit double plastic mountaineering boots, plus ski-mountaineering, telemark, and snowboard boots. It is a very unique overboot in that it can stretch to fit easily over many of the large shell and cuffs of ski-mountaineering, telemark, and the large volume combi-boots such as those from Millet, La Sportiva, etc. It is completely stretchy and can easily fit around the big cuffs and buckles of ski boots.

The Purple Haze is a little easier to put on than the K2, and this can be helpful for some, and especially if using any of the bigger boots.

Olof Sundstrom who was part of a team that made ski descents of "the seven summits" them had this to say when he returned: "The overboots we've been using have indeed been very good, surrounding the entire boot, without leaving either the soles or toe sections exposed to the cold and "leaking" warmth. I continued using the standard Purple Haze overboots from the Everest expedition last spring...excellent product and we hope to be able to continue using them on future expeditions."

The Forty Below® Purple Haze model uses a special nylon covered, 4.7 mm stretchy neoprene closed cell foam insulation, with 2 layers of heat reflecting Titanium, which goes completely around and under the boot, with no gaps in the insulation. The insulation panels are glued together, and also stitched on the inside and outside surface, with no sewn through seams. They fit trim to the boot, and are not bulky. They fit with a wide range of crampon binding styles such as step-in (Crampomatic), semi-step-in (Newmatic) , and strap-on (New Classic) crampon bindings, as well as wire toe ski mountaineering bindings.

The toe and heel area have small triangular shape panels made of a slightly thinner neoprene insulation that allows for many wire toe bails and flip lever heels to simply compress the insulation and rest on the toe and heel groove of the boot. The toe, heel, and lower side area of the overboots have a thin rubber paint applied to add abrasion resistance and help protect the stitching. The closure is in the front using a large size YKK® HEAVY DUTY zipper, with a flap underneath to help keep snow out.

One of the great features of Forty Below® overboots is that they are easy to repair. This is especially helpful, as crampons and rugged terrain are so hard on everything they come in contact with. Repairing is easily done by simply gluing the poke holes together, using glues such as those for repairing neoprene fishing waders, wetsuits, like AquaSeal from McNett, etc. For repairs on the mountain, you can use Forty Below® Repair Patches, which are a special sticky and stretchy tape that works great for repairs during a trip (one is included with each pair of overboots.

The Forty Below® K2 Superlight overboot is a great choice for extreme cold climbs and particularly designed for beefing up the warmth of leather boots. A favorite insulated over-gaiter that has been used for many years on Denali, Himalayas, and Polar expeditions. The unique design allows it to be used with a wide range of crampon binding styles such as step-in (Crampomatic), semi-step-in (Newmatic) , and strap-on (New Classic) crampon bindings, as well as wire toe ski mountaineering bindings. Patterned to fit both plastic and leather mountaineering boots. In addition to being used with double shelled boots for high altitude and cold weather climbs, they can also be fitted to leather climbing boots to help extend their temperature use range. Thus the K2 is patterned to fit both plastic double boots and single leather mountain boots. It does not have insulation in the upper, so it can be used in "less cold" conditions also, for situations such as with boots like the La Sportiva Nepal EVO, etc. So this overboot can be sold for two different kind so of boots and situations, both high altitude on double boots, and on leather boots to help extend their range. The K2 has a crampon patch on the side and a non stretch gaiter fabric so it will not fit on the ski boots.

The Forty Below® K2 Superlight uses a special nylon covered, 4.7 mm stretchy closed cell neoprene foam insulation, with 2 layers of heat reflecting Titanium. This insulation goes from about the top of your climbing boot, completely around and under the boot, with no gaps in the insulation. The insulation panels are glued together and also stitched on the inside and outside surface, with no sewn through seams. They fit trim to the boot, and are not bulky. Because of the stretchy insulation material they are easy to put on in the cold, and they roll up small in your pack.

The toe and heel area have small triangular shape panels made of a slightly thinner neoprene insulation that allows for many wire toe bails and flip lever heels to simply compress the insulation and rest on the toe and heel groove of the boot. The toe, heel, and lower side area of the overboots have a thin rubber paint applied to add abrasion resistance and help protect the stitching. A 2 inch wide heavy duty velcro front closure goes all the way down to the toes for easy adjustment of laces. The upper gaiter goes up to just below the knee, and is made of a non-coated, windproof and breathable Cordura nylon to help minimize frost build up. Elastic drawcord top closure, with a cordlock on top of the gaiter. A special smooth nylon crampon patch is glued and stitched to the instep side of the neoprene for added resistance to crampon pokes, etc.

One of the great features of Forty Below® overboots is that they are easy to repair! This is especially helpful, as crampons and rugged terrain are so hard on everything they come in contact with. Repairing is easily done by simply gluing the poke holes together, using glues such as those for repairing neoprene fishing waders or wetsuits, like AquaSeal from McNett, etc. For the fabric gaiter repairs, the iron-on style fabric patches work well and are really easy to put on, and can in many cases eliminate the need to sew patches on. For repairs on the mountain, use the Forty Below® Repair Patches, which are a special sticky and stretchy tape that work great for repairs during a trip (one is included with the overboot).

Foot Warm-Up® will help keep your feet warm and are packaged in pairs. They work simply by shaking the ingredients together. They are designed thin so as to fit in between a footbed and the sole of the boot (NB must not be used in direct contact with the skin). The "air-activated" Foot Warm-Up® is made of all natural ingredients, environmentally safe, odorless and will supply up to 6 hours of comforting heat for cold feet.

Average heat 38ºC (100ºF) - 40ºC (105ºF) for up to 6 hours. Each double pack measures 12cm x 17cm. 35g.
