Fell running is a peculiarly masochistic British sport of running up (and down) hills (known as fells in the English Lake District where it originated). The running is often off track on steep, usually wet, grassy and heathery hillsides, and the shoes need to have deeply studded soles, and a close gripping fit so that they don't swivel round the foot. They are not waterproof in the slightest, but because of their light weight and good traction are often used in summer by climbers as approach shoes.

 


Walsh - PB Elite Trainer

Crosslite An Italian Fell Running shoe and it's a good one!

The upper is made of breathable light mesh with a non-slip lining. A stretchy gaiter covers the laces, preventing the ingress of mud and stones. The sole is specifically designed for off road use, with tall lugs made from a special "AT FriXion®" rubber compound (a soft and lightweight rubber, totally non-marking, for road and trail running). Sportiva's "Impact Brake System" absorbs impact, helps during traction and holds while braking.

Amazing - a fell running shoe designed by Americans! Here is what one of our customers has to say about it:-

"Back at the start of June I purchased a pair of Trail running shoes from your shop in Keswick, after receiving excellent service and good advice. I had been looking for a pair of shoes to run The Jungle Marathon, a 202km multi-stage footrace through the Brazilian Rainforest. After trying a number of shops, yours had by far the best selection of suitable footware, and very helpful staff (I regret that I can't remember the guys name).
After deciding on the shoes, I was asked if I would let you know how they performed in that environment. Well it turns out they were outstanding,.....I won!!
The combination of incredibly steep slopes (up and down), lateral traverses, terrain changes, logs, branches, mangrove swamps, river crossings, and a lot of running on sandy soil or open sand, placed a lot of demands on the shoe. The agressive sole was nothing short of ideal, I don't remember slipping even once on wet logs. The shoes drained quite well while running and didn't let in a great deal of sand. While they did get a little heavy when initially wet, the stability didn't suffer, and they maintained integrity despite thorns, brambles, and numerous nasties. They provided good ankle support though it may be high for some people and too much purely flat training could cause some irritation as they are meant for off the road. Finally the cushioning, more than for many other fell runners, was ideal for the longer stages (one stage was 87km), and helped with the weight we had to run with.
