The advantage of a windproof fleece is that it is neat, tidy and looks good - however, similar condensation problems to those experienced when using "breathable" waterproofs are likely to occur. A Pertex type windproof top by contrast is not going to win you any fashion awards, but you won't get condensation problems either.

Patagonia's R2 jacket is a masterpiece, and way warmer than you think it should be for the bulk and weight - a fantastic piece of kit!

A super comfy extra warm fleece jacket that is not bulky and is very light. Made from recycled and recyclable polyester. Ideal for Ice, Mixed and Alpine Climbing, Skiing and all other mountaineering use, or just as an everyday warm layer.

Matte-finished R2 fabric is light, stretchy and compressible, with great breathability and features higher loft from improved variegated fibres with longer insulating tall fibres and more dense, supportive short fibres. Directional knit construction increases dry time and speeds moisture transport. Inner collar and cuffs are lined with R1® (made with recycled polyester) for skin comfort. Full-length front coil zipper with a chin flap for smooth protection. Welded handwarmer pockets with reverse-coil zippers and surrounding Supplex® strips for snag-free operation. Zippered chest pocket with welded-in, reverse-coil zipper and surrounding nylon strip for snag-free operation. Slim fit for technical use.

R2®: 7.4-oz. (Polartec® Thermal Pro®) polyester with grid interior. R1®: 6.5-oz. 98% polyester (60% recycled), 2% spandex (Polartec Power Dry®) treated with a wicking finish. 100% recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Very stretchy R1 fabric provides excellent warmth, moisture management and breathability in a variety of temperatures, whether worn as a lightweight pullover or a thick thermal top.

Lightweight yarns wick moisture away from skin; outer, high-surface-area microfiber yarns speed evaporation. The fabric’s interior grid structure enhances compressibility and allows greater airflow; Jersey microfiber face for low-friction, non-binding layering. Offset (to the right) front zipper for chin comfort; chin flap is made from a continuous piece of R1 that lines the whole neck. Brushed polyester mesh chest pocket with glued-in, reverse coil zipper. Lightweight, low-grid polyester stretch panels under the arms increases breathability, moisture transport and mobility. Additional low-grid polyester stretch panels at the wrist and along bottom hem reduces bulk for harness compatibility; Cuffs have glued-in elastic for reduced bulk.
