HELMETS

When trying to choose a helmet there is really no substitute for trying it on, so it's worth borrowing a friend's one to see how it feels and whether it fits you. There is an interesting article on impact testing of helmets on the BMC website which tends to suggest that the safest helmet for general UK use would one where the construction is all foam such as the Salewa Helium, Petzl Metor or Black Diamond Tracer. Beware though that the information in the article was published in 2002 and many of the models have changed now.

Ultra lightweight helmet that has passed the relevant safety tests for climbing and cycling. Can also be used for watersports but makes doing an Eskimo roll rather tricky as it floats too well! Much used in adventure races.

Ultralight helmet designed specially for climbing in hot conditions (so probably not as suitable as the Helium for Scottish winter) with an amazing internal airflow system to cool your fevered bonce. It has passed relevant safety tests for climbing and cycling, canoing and riding. Available colours include Red and White, but we can't be sure to have all of these in stock at any one time. A comfortable and durable helmet with ventilation slots that can be closed off with cunning sliding tabs for winter use. The chin strap is designed to decrease the risk of losing the helmet in case of impact during a fall. Polycarbonate shell, resistant to impact and wear. Integral headlamp clips, simple complete adjustability using a single adjustment wheel with two height positions to adjust the headband size, chin strap position which can be adjusted forward or backward, and position of straps around the ears can be adjusted (rear clip with two positions). Plus adjustable chin strap, comfortable polyester strap suspension and thick foam headband.

The Elios has a high density expanded polypropylene foam headpiece on the inside and an injection moulded Polycrabonate outer shell, providing both lightness and strength.

Looking something like a Star Wars toy that you probably still have almost all of the bits for in a plastic box in the attic, this is the most extrordinary creation - a folding helmet, designed to take up less space in your rucksack. Surprisingly it is pretty comfortable, though does not fit those with large heads. Expect to see one on the next James Bond film!
