Sizing: The only true way to size a rucksack is to try it on, in the shop, with a fair bit of weight in. Slacken off the shoulder straps and top and side tension straps, then do up the hip-belt up, bend forward, and do the hipbelt up even tighter. Now stand up - the sack should be resting on your hips. Now tighten the shoulder straps until they are close but not over-tight. They should curve gently over the shoulders from a take off point between 5 and 15cm down the shoulders. If they do not, it is a fair sign that the sack is the wrong back-length. Do up the chest strap in the same way. Finally tighten the top and side tension straps to draw the load in and achieve maximum comfort. The correct size is related to your back length which is related to, but not totally dependent upon your height. As a rough guide only:

We say: The Black Ice is small enough and light enough for a crag sack and yet large enough and extendable enough to carry tent, bivi kit, food and climbing gear for multiday Scottish Winter or Alpine climbing and ski-touring trips. All the features of the crag sack with the addition of gear loops on the waist-belt and POD's ingenious S.C.A.R.L.s (shockcord axe retaining loop system) which make removing axes whilst wearing gloves a doddle. Warning this sack is stripped down to the bare essentials: ie there is no support in the back, just foam padding and there is no padding at all in the hip belt, nor much of a snow vallance. However it still has a single top pocket, rope tie, bladder pocket, compression straps and wand pockets, plus crampon and ice axe elastics (the latter are not fitted in the photo). Any colour you want as long as it's black.

The largest POD sack, specifically designed for the trekking and expedition market, an area that tests rucksacks to extremes. Like all POD sacks it has a fixed, non-adjustable back-length - considerably more reliable than adjustable systems. The suspension has been made stiffer than on earlier versions by incorporating a section of H.D.P.E. (high density poly-ethylene) into the back panel which works in conjunction with the twin alloy stays to provide the extra ridgidity necessary for carrying huge loads. The hip-belt is also more generously padded with dual-density foam than those on the smaller packs, and is again reinforced with H.D.P.E. All of which makes carrying a huge load for long periods a comfortable, if not exactly an enjoyable, experience.
