Rjukan

In addition to the above Rjukan guidebook, you can download a basic but useful Rjukan Ice Climbing Guide. This shows the location of the routes and grades, and is quite enough to get you around, and has recently (2005) been updated to remove various grading anomalies.

Photo: Stephen Reid leading Fyrstikka (WI5) one of the many almost roadside one pitch icefalls in Area A at Rjukan (Colin Wells).

There is another online Rjukan Ice Guide. This shows the routes in much more detail, and is more accurate on grade, but climbs are presented alphabetically and there is no overplan to help locate them. However if you copy and paste each route into a word document, and the combine it with the guide given above, you will have plenty of information to help you locate the routes.

There is also Ice Climbing in Rjukan which gives current conditions reports.

There is quite a lot of good accomodation in Rjukan, but we can personally recommend Rjukan Hytteby.

There are a number of websites that provide useful ice climbing information for other Norwegian icefalls. Unfortunately most of them are in Norwegian and about as comprehensible to the average Brit as an anual income tax return form. Here are a few that are in English:

Ice Guide for Hemsedal.

Ice Climbing in Laerdal.

The Norway Ice Climbing Database is a user maintained site that my grow into a good resource eventually.
