WATER CARRIERS

Nalgene Tritan bottles are made from Eastman co-polyester and are not only virtually unbreakable but also leakproof and do not make your drink taste of plastic. This material is a replacement for the well esrtablished Lexan bottles and is BPA free).

Wide mouth ones are easier to fill (especially with snow or powdered drink supplements) but tend to slop down your chest when you drink out of them, particularly as you get older. Narrow necked bottles are easier to drink out of but harder to fill. For expedition use go for widemouth ones. The lids are permanantly fixed to the bottles.

Extremely durable, resistant to staining, resistant to retaining odors, recommended for "extreme" adventures, dishwasher safe (though please make sure the cap does not touch the heating element), withstands temperatures from -40ºC to 100ºC, made from Eastman Tritan TM copolyester that is manufactured without Bisphenol A (BPA) (it has a recycling code of #7, which means other).

Forty Below® Deluxe Bottle Boots are the ultimate closed cell foam insulated bottle cover. These neoprene insulated bottle covers help keep the liquid from freezing even at extreme temperatures. Low profile design, so they don't take up much room in the pack, and can usually fit into front chest pockets of expedition jackets. Easy to manipulate with gloves or mittens.

The cap features a moulded in loop, providing a convenient spot to clip a krab to, or a nice finger loop for simple, comfortable carrying. The cap also has a soft touch material for easy gripping. A soft, quiet, clear and rugged resevoir with drink tube and extra large 63mm cap. Specially developed taste free Encapsul material is produced using only saturated polymers. There are no active chemical bonding bites available on (or in) the material, so the material is as clean as glass! High strength is created by a process called Crossed-Modulus, which blends high modulus stiff material with low modulus elastic material to create an energy absorbing strength. Nalgene polythene bottles are not as tough as their Lexan/Tritan counterparts, but they are cheaper and lighter. However they can make drinks taste "polytheney" and they are not so easy to clean.They are ideal for storing things like tea and coffee which need to be kept airtight and dry. They also make good pee bottles (1 litre recommended!). These have a fixed on "loop top".

These are the same as the bottles but have a standard screw top. They are leak proof and ideal for storing anything that needs to be kept dry or any non-corrosive liquid (see the Stoves Section for fuel bottles).

The Waterbelt is a water bag with a variety of attachment possibilities. It can be worn like a money belt around your waist or attached to the exterior of your backpack. It has a capacity of 2 litres and is a good alternative to plastic or aluminum-drinking bottle. An empty Waterbelt takes up very little space and can easily be stowed away inside your pack. It can be converted into a hydration system by using an Ortlieb Drinking Tube (see below).

Flat packing tough durable clear plastic water carriers with a varity of lids. Remarkably tough and long lasting - you can use them over and over again. Generally as long as you rinse them thoroughly after each use and store them with the lid off they will clean well but you can always use a steriliser such as "Milton" (used for babies' bottles) every so often.

Although officially labelled as 4 litres the Ultralite Waist Pouch is probably actually at least double that. It can be used on its own or attach to other OMM packs via its integral clips.

It has mesh dividers inside the main bag, a zipped pocket on the left side (with an internal key clip), a mesh pocket on the right side (also with a key clip) and small drink bottle pocket (with ca 500ml drink bottle included).

The padding on the back is unsewn at either end so that you can store an OS map in behid it - ingenious! There's also a small emergency whistle, compression cords (not shown) and some criss-crossed bungy cord for storing a lightweight jacket under.

Not bad for only 300g (not including the bottle which weighs another 80g)! Yes we know OMM say it's 200g but it isn't.

Steripen purifies water using ultraviolet (UV) light. It destroys viruses, bacteria and protozoa including giardia and cryptosporidium in seconds by simply immersing the pen in the water for a few seconds - see the Steripen Website for more details.

Iodination of water is as effective as chlorine against bacteria, but is more effective against harmful cysts and protozoa such as giardia. Water purified by iodine should not be drunk continuously for more than 4 - 6 weeks at a time.
