WATERPROOFS

There is probably more hot air expanded in the outdoor press on the subject of waterproofs than just about any other subject. Without going into all the contradictory figures that every manufacturer produces to prove their waterproofs are the best, we can safely state that you will get wet when wearing waterproofs, but not, in certain circumstances, as wet as you would get without them! Apart from rain trickling in the hood and sleeves, the major source of moisture is your own sweat. The ability to disperse this sweat is known as "breathability". We certainly cannot tell you what the "best" waterproofs are. This is because that depends on what you want them for, and also we only stock a few, and only a few of those have good enough stock availability to sell on-line. What we can say is that the small selection detailed here are all reckoned to be leaders in their field.

Amazingly light and breathable 2.5-layer waterproof jacket designed for walking, ski-touring, ice and alpine climbing, in fact anywhere where you need something light and packable in your sack in case the weather worsens.

The raised diffusion pattern on inside slides easily over layers, channels moisture away from skin, and protects the waterproof barrier. Sealed waterproof seams; helmet-compatible, roll-down two-way adjustable hood; coated waterproof centre-front zipper for superior wet-weather protection has an improved directional pull; coated, waterproof pit zips; two coated zippered external pockets; zippered internal left chest pocket; perforated hook-and-loop wrist closures are light soft and compressible; drawcord hem; regular fit easily accommodates underlayers.

Fabric: 2.5-layer, 2.7-oz, 50-denier ripstop nylon, with H2No® waterproof/breathable barrier and Deluge® DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

A rare beast - soft shell salopettes! NB Not completely waterproof!

Conduitª Soft Shell laminate is actually a waterproof highly beathable fabric but not all seams are taped so these are not completely waterproof. However they will keep virtually all wind and water on the outside and warmth on the inside. Close fitting and stretchy, these are ideal for winter climbing, ski touring and downhill ski-ing. Marmot are an American company that have many years experience of making outdoor clothing.

Recently they have been developing their designs with the help of instructors at Glenmore Lodge Outdoor Education Centre near Aviemore, Scotland. The staff there are out in all weathers in the Cairngorms, surely one of the testing mountain environments in the world.

As a small shop, we cannot possible stock all of Marmot's range, but we can bring it to you through the wonders of the internet. Items that we do not stock can be ordered to be sent to you direct from their warehouse in Germany if available. Availability is the key here - many products are only made in small numbers and only for a limited period.

We have to say that we do not recommend this method of buying unless you have already seen the product somewhere and know that the size, design and colour are right for you, so please do not order on spec, you'll only be wasting your time and everyone elses!

A superb ultra lightweight breathable waterproof alpine jacket. Not expensive as these things go but still features a good adjustable hood, underarm zips and two roomy pockets. This is the jacket to keep in the bottom of your sack "just in case", whilst wearing your much more comfortable windproofs. Ideal for alpine climbing where weight saving is more important than durability.

The key to PreCip is its barrier technology: a microporous polyurethane that is impregnated with silicon dioxide particles. These particles create small, numerous, very consistent holes that allow the barrier to pass small water vapour molecules but not the bigger liquid ones. This keeps the rain out while letting your sweat vapour work its way outside, away from your body, to keep you dry from the inside as well as from the outside.
