    In 1985 Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the West Face of Siula Grande (6356m) in the Peruvian Andes. After a three day route to the summit and another bivouac, they were descending when Simpson fell and broke his leg. Yates started to lower him down the face below them, a long drawn out and frightening affair due to the total lack of belays and unconsolidated snow. Then it got dark and Simpson ended up dangling over the edge of a cliff of unknown height. With the snow collapsing all around him and no belay, Yates faced a crisis. He couldn't pull Simpson up and couldn't communicate with him. In the end he had no option but to get dragged over the cliff himself or cut the rope.... Now read on!
