Crux AX50 Smoke Description

  • Brand : Crux
  • Season : Not Applicable
  • Code : CRX AX50SM
  • Packaged Weight : 2.01KG
  • The AX50 is based on the previous (no roll-top) Crux AK47 but made of Cordura/Dyneema rather than Kevlar fabric. It is identical to the AX45 except that it has a floating lid that gives you 5 litres extra capacity for carrying food etc when walking in to huts. A very well designed lightweight but tough 45 litre winter climbing/alpine sack with a 5 litre lid extension.

Instead of the AK's famous Kevlar fabric, the AX50 has a lighter Cordura fabric with a 3 mm Dyneema ripstop developed exclusively to Crux's specification. Other changes include changing the frame to twin tubular stays and using narrower webbing (webbing adds a surprising amount of weight to a rucksack). Although the carrying harness is identical to that of the AK sacks, the AX50 has a new feature – the hip belt can be fully removed, leaving just the webbing to fasten around your waist.

The AX50 comes in a two back lengths – Regular (for those up to around 5’11” or 180cm) and Long.
    • External lid pocket.
    • Security pocket on inside of lid.
    • Floating removable lid.
    • Side compression straps – quick and easy to fit or remove.
    • Oversized back haul loop – easy to grab and clip.
    • Top compression strap.
    • Dual drawcord closure system on extension sleeve.
    • 3 mm Tendon drawcord – Crux suggest that it can be used as an emergency abseil sling (but beware it is only 1.4kN and could cut easily on a shap edge).
    • 40mm webbing waist belt with removable hip belt.
    • Internal sleeve for hydration bladder.
    • Two ice-axe holders for modern axes.
    • Wand pockets.
    • Reinforced, double-layer base panel.
    Fabric: 15% Dyneema / 85 % Cordura, 150 g/m².
Frame: Two 7mm tubular titanium stays (removable).
    Capacity 45 litres.

    Weight:  ca 1180g.

    Sizing Information

    Crux Back Sizes and Fitting

Rucksacks are either size 1, 2 and 3, or Regular (R) and Long (L).

Where rucksacks only come in one size, this is equivalent to a Regular.

    Size Backlength Typical Height Range
    1* 45cm 160cm - 170cm
    R 48cm 155cm - 175cm
    2 50cm 170cm - 180cm
    L 55cm 175cm - 185cm
    3 60cm 180cm - 190cm

    * Size 1 is optimised for women, but fits small men also.

Please note: The height range given for each back length is only a guideline and may not be right for your particular proportions. Crux always recommend trying on their rucksacks before you make your final choice.

Typically, the hip-belt should wrap around the top of the pelvis, so that the hips are able to share the overall load (see diagram). But you may wear your rucksack differently, and this will also affect your choice of size. For example, some climbers carry their rucksack “high” – in other words, around their waist and thus above the pelvis – and may prefer a rucksack with a shorter back length.
