The Outdoor Research Alpenice Pant is a fantastic-looking winter climbing trouser for cold and icy conditions. They have a Polartec Alpha insulation lining in the upper half which is super breathable and holds in warmth even when it’s damp or wet. Highly breathable and waterproof AscentShell fabric is used from the knee upwards whilst below the knee a water resistant and very windproof tough softshell fabric is used with crampon patches to protect against ski edges and frontpoints. They feel incredibly light, flexible and cosy to wear but please note that they don't have hand pockets.

* Hydrostatic Head (Waterproofness): Over 20,000mm is excellent. 15,000 - 20,000 is good. 10,000 - 15,000 is OK for moderate rain and below that is not worth considering.
** Breathability: Anything over 20,000 g/m2/24hr is very good indeed, 10,000 to 20,000 is moderate and under 10,000 is not worth considering. Gore-tex Pro estimated figure courtesy of Wikipedia as Gore-tex do not issue breathability figures in g/m2/24hr.
