A selected guide to climbing in the whole of Croatia (excluding the famed Paklenica Gorge which has its own guide). Handy if it is raining in the gorge as there are a few coastal and island crags where it may be dry. In recent years Croatia has become widely acclaimed as one of the finest rock climbing destinations in Europe and the amount of rock here is truly staggering. Such is the variety of climbing on offer - everything from limestone sport climbing to multi-pitch expeditions - that for the first-time visitor it can be very difficult to know where to start.

This guide covers 76 sport climbing crags, mainly around Rijeka (very close to Trieste), and Split, with a smattering elsewhere, including four near Zagreb, and features 4,487 single and multi-pitch routes, from grade 3 to 9a+. It includes 4 new crags and nearly 500 new routes than the previous edition.

It covers the rock climbing around:

  1. Split and the islands of Hvar, Brac and Vis.
  2. Istria region, which covers the area around Pula, Rovinj and Pazin.
  3. Areas around Rijeka and Karlobag.
  4. Areas around Zagreb in Northern Croatia.

All the routes are shown on colour photo topos, with all the routes given French grades (each pitch if appropriate) along with their length. There are; 218 routes from F3a to F4c; 733 routes between F5a and F5c+; 1,726 routes between F6a and F6c+; 1,235 routes between F7a and F7c+; and 315 routes F8a and above. A further 260 routes are classed as projects. Be warned though tat 6a in Croatia is considerably harder than 6a in Greece or Spain!

At the beginning of each crag there is a description of the style of climbing to found, along with a good location map including the parking GPS co-ordinates and QR code, and total number of routes in each grade band. Symbols are used to indicate the approach time, style of climbing to found, height of the crag, best time of the year to climb there and the orientation of the crag.
