Aconcagua, at 6962m, is described in this book as one of the highest places accessible to ordinary mortals, and indeed has been described elsewhere as the highest trek in the world! This does not stop people wanting to climb it, in fact its technical ease makes it an attractive proposition for thousands and the numbers attempting it have increased enormously in recent years. Other changes, in the nature of the mountain, the regulations governing the national park, and life in Argentina generally, are all reflected in this volume.

This guide describes the two major easy routes, The Normal Route and the Vacas Valley Route with notes on a few other routes - it should be noted that these are all high altitude climbs (albeit of an easy nature), not treks. It also describes several other treks in the Southern Andes, in the Aconcagua, Tupungato and Santiago areas.
