Black Diamond Wide Toe Bail (single)

An interchangeable crampon toe bail, designed to fit wide toe boxes such as double plastic mountaineering boots and ski boots.

Sold as a single toe bail.

Using a pair of these you can convert a pair of Clip (semi step-in) Crampons to Pro (full step-in) Crampons though you would probably have to cut the plastic straps off at the front.

Changing bails on Black Diamond crampons is fiendishly difficult and involves much cursing and trapped fingers. Here is an easier method to do it involving a minimum of two people!

1. Hold the crampon very firmly at floor level.
2. Thread a doubled climbing sling through the bail at one of the points it enters the crampon.
3. Manoeuvre the bail so that the lugs line up with the hole.
4. Get someone else to pull up on the sling with all their might.

This should pull the bail out of the hole on one side making it easy to remove. Reverse the procedure to fit the new bail.
